Dear Cholley…
Dear Charlie Manuel,
Can we please just admit that Tom Gordon is washed up? Can we stop putting him into games in the 8th inning and letting him blow huge leads? I mean, I realize the bullpen is hurting for talent right now, but come on… Gordon is bringing them all down. Put him into the game and next thing you know, he has given up 2 runs and has the bases loaded with no outs… and then one of our guys has to come clean up the mess. And whoever that lucky winner is ends up getting overworked, since he’s out there pitching out of a jam every single night. Just look at Romero, you ran him into the ground. Or look at Geary before that. Or just about every other arm in our bullpen.
If for some reason you want to keep using Gordon, can you at least use him early in the game, like the 5th or 6th inning? You don’t let any relievers pitch more than an inning anyway, so why not? At least when he blows our lead we’ll still have 3 or 4 innings left to fight back. Pitching this bum as a set-up guy does nothing but set us up for loss after heartbreaking loss.
So please, do me this one favor. I’d like to see the Phillies in the playoffs again in my lifetime…
