    What If Bonds?

You really can’t help it but follow Barry Bonds right now.  Every sports website has their “Bonds Home Run Watch” on the front page.  You have Bonds Cartoonto pay attention, no matter how you feel about the situation.  Right now though, I’m getting my hopes up.  Bonds is an old guy, he just turned 43 last week.  You have to think, with all his knee problems, he will retire after this season.  Now, he’s been on a huge slump lately – he had just four homers and 10 hits in 59 at bats in the month of July.  Soooo, what if, somehow, by the will of the gods, the season ended and Barry Bonds walks away from baseball, two home runs shy of the record.  An injury or just a flat out slump, anything to stop him from getting those two home runs he needs.  Hell, I’ll even give him the 755th if he wants it.  But if he takes the record from Hank Aaron after all of this…

The thing that annoys me the most about Bonds is that he could have gone down as one of the greatest hitters of all time,  not as a power hitter but a contact hitter.  He’s got 2911 hits on his long career which puts him ahead of Babe Ruth and within striking distance of greats like Frank Robinson and Roberto Clemente.  Even without the juice, he was a great ball player and frankly he ruined it for himself.  If he gets the home run record… it will be meaningless to me and fans of baseball everywhere.  There’s always going to be that asterisk.
