If you saw 300 this weekend (seems like everyone did) and you’re like me, you went into it not knowing anything about the story aside from it just being a huge bloodbath.  Well, they didn’t disappoint on that aspect, but brushing up on Greek history makes it just a bit more meaningful.  Sitting in the theater on Friday night, I had no idea that the film I was watching was based on an actual historical event, called the Battle of Thermopylae (which translates to…  “Hot Gates”).  Reading through this Wikipedia article you can pick up a lot of things from the movies that are factual…  right down to some of the dialog – “So much the better, we shall fight in the shade” is the motto for the modern day Greek 20th Armored Division.
