How I Bought a House, Part 5
It’s Closing Day. If you did everything right up to this point, you should have no fear. A few days before closing you should get a final amount due… make sure you have at least this much stashed in your checking account so the check you write doesn’t bounce. My final costs ended up being less than the good faith estimate and less than the final number they gave me two days before the close. Yours could be more, so be prepared for the worst. Have a good cushion of cash just in case.
My closing was maybe an hour, tops. There’s a huge pile of forms to sign, date, or initial, but that’s it. It was totally painless and really didn’t even feel like a big deal, despite the large check you write at the end of it.
Believe it or not, that’s it – that’s the story of how I bought a home. Ultimately it was uneventful and I am glad for that. I hope I was able to pass on a few good tips, though. Most of them might be common sense, but the prospect of buying a house can be so overwhelming that common sense can get left by the wayside. All in all, it’s not as difficult as it may seem… for me it was actually a very exciting and enjoyable experience. Just make sure you have good people working for you… then you can just relax and daydream about where you’re going to put the 52″ plasma in your new living room!
